I’m sitting at a dining room table with a small paintbrush in my hand and one A4-size paper between me and my 3-year-old. She asked me to help her make a picture, which often means I paint the outlines and she colours in.
Whilst I enjoy this lovely time with my daughter, that day I had a to-do list longer than my spiral staircase, and I could really do with ticking a few things off — even something as ‘simple’ as clearing my inbox and flagging emails I need to go back to....
I figured that while she colours, I could multitask and work on my phone — water and paint going everywhere is highly likely, so I’d rather risk my phone than the laptop…
I dipped the brush in the water. ‘What colour should I use?’ I asked.
‘Red!’ the answer came, almost without a moment to think about it.
‘Red it is. What are we drawing?’
‘A dinosaur!’ came the reply just as quickly as the previous one.
So with the briefing out of the way, I attempted to paint a dinosaur more-or-less resembling a T-rex.
‘Here you go,’ I replied victoriously, just as a small hand snatched the brush from me and began colouring in...
With a T-rex turning pink with every stroke, I unlocked my phone and was about to tap the email app when a piercing, high-pitched scream stopped me in my tracks.
